The Shop
Our shop is located on an old shipping pier in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The building also houses a winery, a bronze company, and several other woodshops. The bottom floor flooded completely during Hurricane Sandy; we were fortunate to be on the second floor. The open door to the right of the 324 goes to our creaky freight elevator, which has trapped all of us at one point or another.
Here's the view out the window looking south. (Enlarge any of these photos by clicking on them.)
Looking North toward Manhattan.
That's Greg making a fantastic lamp.
Prototype of a mother of pearl bookend being developed by Pat.
Our pride and joy, an Altendorf digital table saw. It can cut to within 1/1000th of an inch. (We also have a Holtz table saw for milling large lumber that is even more powerful and can rip a board out of your hands and throw it across the shop. Don't ask me how I know that.)
My studio. I built the upstairs area along with a wooden fold down ladder that's raised and lowered using sailboat tackle. You can just barely see the bow of the Interclub dinghy.
There are about 20 professional woodworkers in the shop (plus one metal worker and one painter) and we share the big equipment. We've got three table saws, a jointer, planer, drill press, two band saws, a couple lathes, a sharpening station, a sandblasting booth, and various sanding machines. We also have a large spray room for painting, as well as a finishing room with a ventilated floor that sucks out all the dust. We also have a club room with a kitchen and fireplace. On a really good day, someone will bring in a fish they caught and roast it over the fire.
